Access one of the UK’s deepest coastal sites for efficient, realistic underwater equipment testing just minutes from Tritonia’s base in Oban.
Deep-Water Testing in Scotland’s Unique Nearshore Environment
Just off the coast of Oban lies one of the UK’s deepest coastal basins – reaching approximately 200 metres. This rare environment is remarkably close to shore, discreet, and ideal for testing underwater technology in conditions significantly deeper than typically accessible around the British Isles.
These nearshore depths allow manufacturers, researchers, and developers to trial equipment in realistic, pressure-representative conditions while retaining the convenience of fast deployment, rapid iteration, and reduced operational cost. Clients can complete multiple deployment–recovery cycles in a single day, supporting efficient and effective development workflows.
A Practical, Real-World Testing Platform
Our location offers many of the benefits associated with offshore or deep-water trials, but without the logistical burden. With deep water only a few miles from Tritonia’s base, clients gain reliable access to meaningful depth while maintaining operational flexibility.
Alongside our marine team, we provide workshop facilities, vessel support, monitoring capability, and the option to integrate additional Tritonia services such as imaging, data collection, and ROV support. It’s a complete testing solution tailored to subsea innovation.
Vessel Support
Our vessels are equipped to support a broad range of subsea testing activities, including deployment, recovery, and real-time monitoring. RTK positioning enables highly precise operations, and our launch and recovery systems are designed to maintain safety and control even in challenging weather conditions. Our marine team works closely with clients to ensure smooth, coordinated operations aligned with test objectives.
Robotics Workshop & Tools
Clients have access to our onshore robotics workshop for adjustments or minor modifications between deployments. The facility includes tools such as electronics soldering equipment, power tools (drills, sanders, grinders), and a full range of hand tools like screwdrivers, Allen keys, and tapping tools. While specialist, system-specific equipment is not held onsite, all essential tools are available – removing the need to bring basic items.
Data & Monitoring Support
We offer real-time data monitoring and surface support during deployments, helping clients track performance, troubleshoot issues, and gather information throughout testing. Our team can also assist with environmental data collection, instrument checks, and operational planning to ensure that each trial delivers meaningful results.
Imaging & Inspection
For clients requiring visual verification, Tritonia can integrate underwater imaging and photogrammetry into testing operations. This service provides high-resolution visuals to evaluate performance, verify structural behaviour, or assist with troubleshooting. Our team has extensive experience in scientific imaging and subsea documentation.
Applications & Use Cases
Our deep-water testing environment supports a wide range of sectors, including marine robotics, aquaculture technology, environmental monitoring, offshore renewables, defence applications, and academic research. Whether validating new prototypes or preparing equipment for commercial deployment, our location and expertise provide an accessible and dependable platform for real-world testing.
