As part of a Marine Scotland initiative, the Blue Carbon Forum are currently assessing and monitoring the turnover and storage capacity of carbon in ‘Blue Carbon’ habitats. Seaweed detritus may have a significant role to play in long-term storage of carbon. The main aims of this project were to quantify the production of detritus by seaweed in habitat and monitor the turnover of detritus on local beaches.
Tritonia provided SCUBA support for the collection and analysis of detrital seaweed on dive sites and produced 3D models of beach cast wrack on local beaches to assess the turnover of biomass over a time period of two years. The 3D modelling suite at Tritonia Scientific can produce models accurate to 0.1 cm using aerial photography with drones. The professional dive team allow access to hard-to-reach kelp forests in a safe and reliable way.
